MAILab and Asan Medical Center Department of Pediatrics Co-Publish AI Research on Kawasaki Disease in Biomedicines

We are thrilled to announce that MAILab has co-authored a peer-reviewed research article published in Biomedicines—in collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics at Asan Medical Center, one of Korea’s leading hospitals. The study, titled “Limited Performance of Machine Learning Models Developed Based on Demographic and Laboratory Data Obtained Before Primary Treatment to Predict Coronary Aneurysms,” is a significant contribution to AI-driven pediatric cardiology, particularly in the context of Kawasaki disease, the most common cause of acquired heart disease in children in developed countries.
🩺 Research Backed by Clinical and AI Expertise
This research brought together clinical experts from Asan Medical Center and AI scientists from MAILab to explore whether machine learning models can accurately predict coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) using only demographic and laboratory data collected before treatment. The study analyzed a robust dataset of over 17,000 pediatric cases from national epidemiological surveys.
While the machine learning models slightly outperformed traditional tools such as the Harada score, the results revealed the limitations of using basic clinical data alone—underscoring the need for more comprehensive data (e.g., coronary artery imaging, genomics) to improve predictive performance.
“We hope our findings will lay the groundwork for more advanced, data-enriched predictive tools in pediatric cardiology,” added Dr. Yeon Jin Jang, CMO of MAILab.
🔗 The Power of Partnership
This publication is a result of the deep collaboration between MAILab and Asan Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics, and it highlights the critical role that medical-AI partnerships will play in the future of diagnostics and treatment.
